IVF treatment: A hope for the future

IVF treatment may be a hope for the future for some couples, especially those who are struggling with infertility. Unfortunately, IVF is not a cure and many women still go on to have miscarriages, or not be able to carry their baby to full term. That's why it's so important that you talk about adoption with your fertility doctor so that when you do become pregnant with your own child, you will know how to get him or her into your arms.  

Some couples believe that infertility may be just a part of life. They are afraid to talk about it and therefore don't know about the treatments available to them. Others could not even conceive and when they decide to go through IVF treatment, they feel relieved and want to share this experience with others.

IVF treatment

IVF treatment is a process that many couples use to have their own child. It involves the use of a woman's egg and a man's sperm to create an embryo, which is then fertilized with the couple's own egg or sperm.

The embryos are put into a woman's womb and grow until they are ready for implantation in the uterus. This process takes time and requires special equipment and medications. However, it can be very effective at producing healthy babies.

IVF success rates

The best way to measure the success of IVF is to look at live birth rates. A study published in The Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology looked at the live birth rates for patients undergoing IVF in the United States between 1978 and 1992. The researchers found that the live birth rate for women aged 20 to 34 years was 21 percent per cycle, while the live birth rate for women over 35 years old was 8 percent per cycle. For women age 35 to 39 years old, the live birth rate was 1 percent per cycle; for women aged 40-44, the rate was 2 percent; and for those aged 45-49, it was 3 percent per cycle.

The researchers also looked at how many cycles were needed to achieve a pregnancy. They found that after six cycles there was an 86 percent chance of achieving a pregnancy; after eight cycles there was a 47 percent chance; after 10 cycles there was a 32 percent chance; after 12 cycles there was a 29 percent chance; and after 15 cycles there was a 25 percent chance.

How does IVF work?

IVF is a fertility treatment that uses your egg and sperm to create embryos.IVF treatment works by stimulating your ovaries to produce more eggs, which are then collected and fertilised with the sperm of your partner. The fertilised eggs are then placed back into your uterus where they can implant and grow.

IVF can increase your chances of getting pregnant with twins or multiples

IVF is a procedure that yields success rates of approximately 30 percent after one cycle and 55 percent after three cycles. These numbers, while still quite high, are actually similar to the numbers achieved with IUI—a procedure that explicitly aims to increase the chances of getting pregnant with multiples by using naturally higher levels of fertility-related hormones. 

Naturally, this raises the question: why don't more women go for IUI? The good news is that more healthcare professionals are realizing that there is no increased risk for complications with IUI, which means it's worth the extra time and money to many patients. So if you're struggling to get pregnant with your first child and don't care about multiples, then IVF is most likely your best bet. But if you'd like to have twins or other multiples and IVF isn't getting you there, ask your doctor about IUI.
